Follow these real-time steps to get your first project on Upwork
1. Select the bid relevant to your skills
You must only select the bid that is really relevant to your skills and that you think can be achieved by you. Upwork provides a few number of bids i.e 60 connect from which you can do 30 bids. So you must use these connects wisely throughout the month to keep the balance. This will help you win the project that are suitable for you.
2. Don’t write generic proposal, make it customized one
Many people fails due to this aspect as they copy and paste the same template in every bid in order to win the bid without any efforts. But this don’t really impress the client and you have very less chances of winning them. Try to describe each point that is described in the description with the way you would carry out or you are capable of doing it. This will surely impress the client and would prefer you over others.
3. Don’t charge too low or too high in the beginning
This creates different impression in front of the client if he is potential as they would not prefer those who decreases the rates for winning but this is not true for all, as many of them prefer for the lowest as well. This only applies if you want to work with a potential client. Demanding too much may also lead you to lose the project hence keep it average according the country you belong to.
4. Don’t make false promises
If you can’t have time from your whole day and can’t meet the deadlines than you must not hurry up saying that you can contribute xyzhrs/day, this creates negativity and bad impression of your working process. Clear from the beginning about your availability that when you can start the project and how much hours you can dedicate per day or week.
5. Convey that you can perform a test task or schedule an interview
You can gain the confidence of your client by letting them know that you are fine by performing the test task or schedule an interview for their convenience to test your skills, competency and ability for the project. This makes things more clear and helps the client identify a responsible candidate in you.
6. Represent your work samples and experience
This is also most important aspect as without talking or starting a conversation with a person the client can identify who has done more remarkable work in past and who can be most promising candidate for the project. Provide the contributions that you have made up to date with its description and your role in it. This will help the client get a clear picture about you easily.
7. Provide some client reviews for your work if needed
Finally, this is the powerful weapon to represent yourself in front of a new client with the help of your past clients. 90% of the people refer the testimonials or client reviews for the experience they had with you while working on their project. After the response of the client you can provide the contact details of your previous clients so that they can talk in person with the concerned person to more about you.
